Dean Eddie Uehara is featured on NBC News Asian America, addressing the topic of diversity among higher education leadership. In the video, she discusses how her own diversity has impacted her path to leadership and shares her vision for creating an inclusive learning community. According to the American Council on Education, there is a noticeable lack of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in leadership positions at U.S. colleges and universities. The School of Social Work made a concerted effort to reverse this trend in the 1990s. Says Dean Uehara in the video: "When I got to the University of Washington in 1990, I was part of a brilliant hiring scheme. There were four or five women of color that were hired from good schools of social of work to be on the faculty all of once. Three of them were Asian American. I didn't realize it at the time but having that whole cohort of women, particularly Asian-American peers, was one of the most precious resources I could possibly have as a new hire."
