Today, Dean Eddie Uehara and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Tessa Evans-Campbell sent a letter to the School of Social Work community informing them that MSW student Melinda Brockie was injured in the Las Vegas shooting on Oct. 1.

Dear School of Social Work community:

It is with great sadness that we share that a member of our social work community was injured in the Las Vegas shooting. Melinda Brockie—a School of Social Work MSW student—was shot during the Route 91 Harvest music festival near the Mandalay Bay resort in Nevada. Melinda is in stable condition, recovering in a Las Vegas hospital following emergency surgery. Her husband and other family members traveled to Las Vegas to join her.

Before joining the School of Social Work, Melinda was a student in human services at Western Washington University where she graduated in 2016. She and her husband are active members of the Lummi Nation tribal nation located west of Bellingham, Washington. She is the mother of two sons.

We extend our deep and heartfelt hopes for Melinda’s complete and speedy recovery. The School will  join with the friends of the Brockie family, who have established a GoFundMe account, to help pay for the family’s unexpected medical and travel expenses.

We also encourage any students impacted by the shooting to contact Student Services at the School of Social Work or UW counseling services for support.

Eddie Uehara, Dean
