Human Subjects Review

Welcome to the School of Social Work Human Subjects Review

A Memo from Associate Dean for Research David Takeuchi

Dear Faculty, Students and Staff:

All research undertaken by faculty, students or staff at the University of Washington involving human subjects must be approved by the UW Human Subjects' Office PRIOR to any contact with potential study participants or to beginning a secondary data analysis study.

The purpose of Human Subjects review is to ensure that the rights of persons participating in research projects are protected. The University of Washington and the School of Social Work take seriously their responsibility to protect persons who participate in our studies.

It may take as long as three months to go through the approval process for a full review, so please plan ahead! Under certain conditions, a minimal risk review is possible, and in rare cases, an exemption from full Human Subjects review may be granted. All requests for exemption must undergo an in-house review by our 3-person committee and must be forwarded to the Human Subjects Division. Please allow two weeks for review of requests for exemption.

If, after reviewing all of the links on this website, you have questions about the type of review suitable for your project, application forms, or need assistance with the process, contact David Takeuchi via email at: dt5@uw.edu, or call (206) 543-6813.

Sincerely,

David Takeuchi
Professor and Associate Dean for Research
