Part-time Online MSW Program FAQs
The following questions and answers are specifically tailored for prospective students interested in our part-time, online, MSW program option.
Applications will be open in September 2025 for our first cohort who will begin in the fall of 2026.
The Online MSW Program is designed for individuals who are passionate about serving their communities through advanced social work practice but face barriers to attending in-person programs. Our ideal candidates are:
- Working adults, caregivers and others who require a flexible learning model that supports their professional and personal obligations within WA service-delivery areas.
- Community-based professionals who are currently working in social service, healthcare, education, tribal, or nonprofit settings and wish to advance their clinical social work skills and credentials without leaving their communities.
- Individuals living in Washington State or neighboring rural or underserved regions – especially those in areas with limited access to graduate education – who are able to complete practicum placements in Washington State.
Individuals committed to serving marginalized populations, promoting equity, and addressing systemic challenges across Washington and the broader Pacific Northwest.
To be successful in the Online MSW program, students should have access to reliable and up-to-date technology that supports active participation in virtual classes, completion of assignments, and collaboration with peers and faculty. At a minimum, students should have:
- A reliable computer (laptop or desktop) capable of running current software programs, with sufficient memory and processing speed to support video conferencing, word processing, and web-based applications.
- High-speed internet connection to ensure stable video and audio during synchronous class sessions. A wired connection is ideal, but strong Wi-Fi is typically sufficient.
- Webcam and microphone (built-in or external) to engage fully in live class discussions, presentations, and group work.
- Headphones or a headset to improve sound quality and reduce background noise during online meetings.
- Up-to-date operating system and web browser compatible with the learning management system (e.g., Canvas), videoconferencing platforms (e.g., Zoom), and other academic tools.
- Backup plan for connectivity issues, such as access to a secondary device, hotspot, or quiet public space with internet (like a library or campus location), especially during critical class times.
Although the securement of technology is the ultimate responsibility of the student, students are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the university’s tech support services and attend any orientation or training offered to get comfortable with the platforms used in the program. Accessibility needs and financial limitations should be communicated early to the program staff, who may be able to connect students with resources or accommodations.
The part-time MSW programs are fee-based (dependent on credit load and associated course fees). The current tuition for the three-year, part-time program is estimated to be $79,801. For more information on tuition cost per credit hour, please see here.
You will take an average of 2 classes at a time most quarters and should expect to spend 4 to 6 hours in synchronous classes held in the evening each week. Synchronous class sessions are typically offered weekday evenings that require about three hours of instruction (e.g., 6:00 to 8:50PM). Please note that this time block only applies to your course schedule, and not your practicum schedule. Your in-person practicum hours will be determined by you, your practicum supervisor, and your SSW Field Advisor after your practicum placement is confirmed.
The inaugural cohort for this program will be approximately 25 students.
Currently we offer the Clinical Social Work Specialization in the Online MSW Program.
Online students will have full access to the support and services of the School of Social Work’s Student Services office, including academic advising.
