Fall Quarter

September
  • Announcement sent to the Deans and Directors of Social Work programs introducing recent and upcoming graduates who are seeking jobs.
  • New Student Orientation - Takes place before the first day of the quarter.   
  • PhD Program Committee (formerly known as Steering Committee) - Meets twice a month. Fall and spring quarters for program business; winter quarter to review admissions applications, select applicants and make offers.
October
  • PhD Program Recruitment Open House - For prospective students.
  • PhD Program Autumn Town Hall - Organized for current students by student representatives serving on the PhD Program Committee.
  • National Council of Social Work Education (CSWE) conference.
  • Application period for the Institute of Translational Health (ITHS), Tl 1 year long program opens in late October.  See UW ITHS site for additional information.  

November
  • Comprehensive Oral Examination on First-Year Courses - Taken by cohort who began program during previous academic year. 
December 
  • Admissions applications due.  PhD Program Committee begins review of applications.
  • Council of Social Work Education (CSWE) Minority Fellowship application period opens.  See CSWE site for additional information.  

Winter Quarter

January
  • Magnuson award nominations - Call from Health Sciences comes early January and is due back end of January. Program Office announces call for applications and Awards Committee ranks applicants.
  • National Society for Social Work and Research (SSWR) Conference - Usually takes place at the end of the month. 
  • Application period for the Institute of Translational Health (ITHS), Tl 1 summer program opens in mid-January.  See UW ITHS site for additional information.  

February 
  • Huckabay Teaching Fellowships - Distributed in February, due mid-April. 
  • Council of Social Work Education (CSWE) Minority Fellowship applications are due.  See CSWE site for additional information.  

March 
  • Graduate School Dissertation Fellowship Competition for Social Sciences - Distributed late March/early April, due mid-May.
  • Visit Day - For students offered admission for the next academic year. 

Spring Quarter

April
  • PhD Program Spring Town Hall - Organized for current students by student representatives serving on the PhD Program Committee.
  • Call goes out for SSW Faculty Mentor Award nominations. 
  • CV's and relevant porfolio materials are requested from students expecting to graduate and go on the job market the following September.    
  • Information for annual PhD newsletter requested from students. 
May
  • Elections for committees: faculty to PhD Program Committee; students for PhD Program Committee, Student Advisory Counsel (SAC), Awards Committee, and Graduate Professional Student Senate (GPSS).
  • First year cohort selects dates for the First-Year Exams and communicates that information to Program Office.  
June 
  • End-of-year advising checklists are due back by end of finals week. 
  • CV's and relevant porfolio materials are due from students expecting to graduate and go on the job market in September.   
  • Graduation.
  • Annual PhD newsletter distributed.  

Summer Quarter

June, July, August & early September 
  • Comprehensive Written Examination on First-Year Courses - Taken by cohort who began program previous September.     
  • SSW portfolio site is updated to include new materials submitted by graduating students going on the job market in September.
