2022 School of Social Work Graduation Celebration
Each year, celebrating the achievements of our social work graduates is a joyful occasion—a tradition that’s even more jubilant this year as we return to an in-person event.
Our 2022 graduation will be held Thursday, June 9 at 7 p.m. at the Alaska Airlines Arena at Hec Edmundson Pavilion. The program includes welcoming remarks from Dean Eddie Uehara, recognition awards, student performances, conferral of student degrees, and an inspiring presentation from our keynote speaker, Girmay Zahilay, a social justice advocate, King County councilmember and son of Ethiopian refugees.
We’ll be livestreaming the celebration for family and friends who want to join us remotely. This YouTube link will go live approximately one hour before the celebration starts. Check back then.
Our keynote speaker: Girmay Zahilay
Born in Sudan to Ethiopian refugees, Girmay Zahilay and his family moved to the U.S. when he was three. He graduated from Stanford University and the University of Pennsylvania Law School and interned at the White House during the Obama administration.
To better connect with the communities he wanted to serve, Zahilay founded the nonprofit Rising Leaders. In 2019, he was elected to represent District 2 for the King County Council, its youngest member and the only sitting Black county council member in Washington state.
