BASW juniors reflect on their first week in the program

October 16, 2025

The newest cohort of Bachelor of Arts in Social Welfare (BASW) juniors has completed their first week in the program and they are already feeling inspired, challenged and deeply connected to their goals. Asked to reflect on their early impressions, three students shared what has stood out most during this important transition.

Fatima Kabba

“In my first week as a Social Welfare major, I’ve felt excited and a little overwhelmed—but in a good way. The discussions have already been so open and inspiring. Coming from a Gambian background and growing up seeing how community and care are such an important part of our culture, I’ve always felt called to help others. That’s what led me to social welfare. I want to become a social worker and eventually start my own nonprofit to give back to my community. I know it’s going to be challenging, but I’m ready for the growth and purpose that come with it.”

Gabriela Ramirez

“This week shifted everything I felt about this academic experience. I never imagined that at the age of 31 I would be following my dreams and pursuing my BASW, and I especially never anticipated that it would happen during one of the most challenging moments of my life while I was transitioned into single motherhood. The range of emotions, fears and worries with which I began this week was overwhelming. However, I already feel the weight lifting after completing this first week. Meeting my professors, classmates, advisors and all those who surround us to support our success has filled me with a sense of peace, confidence and renewed motivation. Now I feel more at ease and excited about everything this academic journey has to teach me — the doors that will open, the wonderful people I will meet and all the experiences that will help shape me into a better person.”

Amor Campos

“During my first week in the Social Welfare major, I’ve experienced a profound sense of enthusiasm and motivation. I can already see how the coursework lines up with my desire to help people and make a difference, and it was nice to see how meaningful it was to be in the presence of others who are similarly passionate. I was taken aback by how quickly class conversations can connect to real life issues, and it made me realize how relevant and meaningful this work can be.”
