Paula Nurius, associate dean for transdisciplinary scholarship and Grace Beals-Ferguson Scholar at the School of Social Work, was recently selected to serve on the national board of the American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare. She is also an AASWSW Fellow.

Social work has enormous talent and capacity which is not often well-recognized, particularly as a scientific workforce,” said Nurius, in response to her board appointment. “I care deeply about our field’s vibrancy and I am ready to roll up my sleeves to undertake tasks that are central to the Academy’s mission. Working with other highly experienced Academy members will offer a unique national perspective.”

Nurius, named one of social work’s top 25 female scholars on the basis of her scholarship impact, brings extensive experience to teaching and collaborating within interdisciplinary frameworks. A mental health specialist, she studies the processes and effects of stress and trauma on vulnerable and socially disadvantaged populations as well as early/preventive interventions and fostering resilience. Other professional interests include adolescent and adult mental health, victim violence and psychosocial impacts, and coping and resilience supports.

She is an elected Fellow of the Society for Social Work & Research and was the first to receive the GADE National Leadership in Doctoral Education Award.

AASWSW is an organization of distinguished scholars and practitioners who are dedicated to excellence in the field of social work and social welfare through high-impact scholarship and research that advances the social good.
