The UW announced yesterday that all three UW campuses (Seattle, Bothell and Tacoma) have received the Carnegie Community Engagement Classification, an elective designation that indicates institutional commitment to community engagement.

In the University announcement, three examples of the hundreds of UW community engagement initiatives are mentioned (one per campus). For the Seattle campus, the UW spotlighted the School of Social Work’s Communities in Action (CinA) project in south central Seattle, which uses the Communities that Care (CTC) system developed by the Social Development Research Group to promote healthy youth development.

The Carnegie Community Engagement Classification is awarded following an intensive process of self-study by each higher education institution, which is then assessed by a national review committee. It is a highly competitive process: only 41 percent of all higher education institutions that applied received the CCE classification this year. The three UW campuses applied separately—and all three were awarded CCE classification.
