Today, almost half of recently deployed veterans get their health care outside the 1,700 facilities managed by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. That number of users increases to 75 percent for all veterans, and many female veterans choose not to access care from the VA at all.

Walking the Trail of Tears to understand past trauma and promote better health
During each of the last two years, social work professor Karina Walters has spent a little over a week walking through swampland and battling heat and insects along nearly 70 miles of the Trail of Tears. Her goal: to help Native American participants rethink their health by reconnecting with an historical trauma that shaped the Choctaw nation.
Amnon Shoenfeld receives the 2014 Distinguished Alumni Award
Amnon Shoenfeld (MSW ’79) is the 2014 School of Social Work Distinguished Alumni Award recipient. A passionate and tireless champion for individuals with mental illness or substance abuse issues, Shoenfeld recently retired as director of the King County Mental Health, Chemical Abuse and Dependency Services Division, where he worked for more than 30 years.
