Personal Computer-Use Guidelines
We recommend that, whenever possible, only a School of Social Work-owned laptop be used for presentations. If you use a personal computer, the following conditions must be met for SSW Tech to provide support
- Your laptop or MacBook should be no older than 3 years.
- You need to have a VGA/ RGB adapter for your MacBook to enable it to connect to our projectors.
- You need MS Office or MS Office for the Mac installed to show a PowerPoint presentation.
Our audio-visual equipment is compatible with these operating systems:
- Windows XP, all versions
- Windows Vista, all versions
- Windows 7, all versions
- MAC OS X 10.4 or later
Presentations
Visitors to the School are welcome to use their personal laptop computers as stand-alone (non-networked) devices for presentations or other uses of available classroom technology. Assistance with setting up a laptop to work with the overhead projector is available. If we have difficulty with your system, we cannot troubleshoot the problem. We will try to locate an available school laptop for your class.
Internet Access
The School’s wireless network supports hardware rated for the 802.11a, b, and g standards. Becasue we cannot loan wireless network adapters, please be sure your system is equipped with properly functioning wireless hardware before your arrival.
In order to access any websites or network resources located outside of the University of Washington, a network user account (called a UW NetID) must be established for your use. Please notify your School contact of this need one week prior to your visit, so that a UW NetID is created for you.
Network Security
We strongly recommend that you fully update your computer with all available Windows security patches, as well as protect your system with up-to-date antivirus software prior to using the School’s wireless network. Contact your network administrator or technical support help desk for more information.
It is not uncommon for an un-patched system on the UW network to be compromised in less than five minutes. The University of Washington’s Network Operations Center will revoke the access of any system that impacts the stability and integrity of the UW network, underscoring the need to properly secure your system ahead of time.
NOTE: For security purposes, it is prohibited to connect a non-School of Social Work computer to the UW network by any means other than a wireless connection.
