Associate Teaching Professor Khalfani Mwamba is the 2024 MLK Jr. Community Service Award recipient. In its announcement, the selection committee noted Mwamba's unwavering commitment to the foundational tenets of social justice, which he demonstrates in his daily interaction with students, colleagues and community partners.

As one award nominator wrote: “Khalfani never fails to engage generously, openly and with great kindness in our work together. Much of this work explicitly engages race, and he invites each of us to engage, regarding us all with great respect, and engaging everyone as a worthy contributor. He champions the work with a measured determination that is both loving and deeply humble, very much in the spirit of Dr. King’s legacy."

Given annually by the University of Washington health sciences schools and the UW Medicine Office of Healthcare Equity, this award honors individuals or groups who exemplify Martin Luther King, Jr.’s principles through commitment to addressing community needs, particularly communities of color and low income; development and implementation of significant programs to improve the human condition; and outstanding efforts to protect and empower all individuals.

Mark your calendar for Thursday, January 11, 9:30–10:30 a.m., School of Social Work, Room 305A, to celebrate Khalfani’s well-deserved recognition with music, food and friends.

The event will be hybrid to ensure accessibility.
