Eligibility

We have an opening for two MSW Students starting Fall quarter, 2024. We are currently accepting applications until April 2nd, 2024.

Consideration is highly competitive. Current MSW students are eligible to apply to this position, as well as prospective MSW students who are simultaneously applying for MSW admission. Current MSW Day and EDP students are eligible to apply but should note that the successful candidate will be expected to work 20 hours per week, including evenings, weekends, quarter breaks, and daytime office hours (9:00-5:00).

MSW Students; In the academic year (autumn, winter, and spring quarters), Academic Student Employees (ASEs) must be enrolled full-time, which is ten credits. Occasionally students may have extenuating circumstances that preclude them from enrolling full-time (e.g. health issues). In such circumstances, they can file a Petition for Reduced Enrollment. If the petition is approved, the student is eligible to hold an ASE position while enrolled less than full-time.”

EDP students registered for fewer than 10 credits per quarter may be eligible, but will need to submit a Petition for Reduced Enrollment; (and have it be approved) in order to be eligible for a graduate assistantship appointment if offered the position.  

Commitment is 50% FTE (with a maximum of 220 hours per quarter per Article 33 of the collective bargaining agreement between the UW and UAW local 4121).  The successful candidate must be enrolled as a Master of Social Work student for Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters.

Summer Quarter Opportunity:

If desired one position of the three total will be available for work summer terms A&B, and this position can be a shared position between two ASE students; one student working A term, and the other B term, working 10 hrs. a week. You must be enrolled in at least 2 credits under this contract, and this will be under a separate 3 month contract.  

Basic Functions and Responsibilities

Direct support of the School of Social Work computer labs plus consultation and help desk support to students, faculty and staff on a variety of software applications, printer questions and other computing related questions.

Typical Work

  • Provide assistance to Lab users on software and hardware (e.g. printer, scanner, usb drive, remote terminal access) use.
  • Provide assistance to faculty and staff on software questions, printer problems, and minor hardware concerns too.
  • Provide training to faculty, staff and students on a variety of supported software and hardware, both through one-on-one tutorials and in conducting workshops on selected software.
  • Assist with tasks related to the distribution of computing equipment and the rendering of services related to computing, including inventory and other administrative tasks related computing and media services in the School.
  • Perform related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Windows, Word and Excel for Windows, Internet Browsers and email software is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform work in an independent manner, self motivated, and using professional customer service communication skills.
  • Ability and desire to work effectively in a multi-cultural and multi-ethnic environment.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with a range of software (e.g., Powerpoint, Excel, SPSS, etc).
  • Professional demeanor, reliability and ability to learn new programs quickly and independently.
  • Hardware and software troubleshooting skills.
  • Experience tutoring or teaching one-on-one or with small groups.
  • Demonstrated skill in communicating technical information to people from diverse backgrounds in a socially sensitive, friendly, and understandable manner.
  • Demonstrated skill in independently seeking out needed information from a variety of information sources (on hardware and software issues), including various sites on the Internet.
  • A two-year commitment to the position is greatly preferred/desired (this may or may not include summertime work—that would be made clear at the time of hiring).

This position is half-time (20 hours/week). The position requires the availability and ability to work shifts on weekend days and weekdays/evenings from 8am-9pm shared by the three consultants.

Supervision Received

The Student Computer Consultant will receive direct supervision from the SSW Director of Information Technology and may also receive task assignment and/or direction from the Computer Maintenance and Digital Media Technicians.

Classification, Contract Period and Compensation

This position is classified as an Academic Student Employee (ASE) position governed by a collective bargaining agreement between the University of Washington and UAW Local 4121. This is a graduate student assistantship that includes a tuition waiver, pay and benefits as outlined in the collective bargaining agreement.  Benefits include medical, dental and vision eligibility and coverage under the Graduate Appointee Insurance Plan. In accordance with the Academic Student Employee (ASE) contract, the Student Computer Consultant will be paid at the current Premaster’s SA rate. The appointment carries a waiver of the quarterly tuition (or for EDP students, quarterly EDP course fees) and the operating fee, building fee, and technology fee; the selected candidate will be responsible for paying a number of other, smaller required additional fees. All ASEs shall be provided with a reasonable amount of break time and facilities necessary for expressing breast milk for a nursing child.  Established lactation facilities.
