Jennifer Maglalang, lecturer and BASW/MSW program coordinator, is this year's recipient of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Volunteer Recognition Award for the School of Social Work. This award recognizes Maglalang for the positive impact she has had at the School and in the larger community.

This year's theme borrows from Martin Luther King, Jr.'s observation: The time is always right to do what is right.

Maglalang is known for her ability to empower students, particularly first generation, students of color and immigrants. She has facilitated networking activities of students, staff and faculty of color and those who identify as biracial or multiracial. She has also established and moderated listserves through which different groups are able to easily communicate and collaborate. These kinds of support, often invisible, are crucial to social work student success.

Outside of the School, Maglalang is a leader in neighborhood community development, youth development, program planning and evaluation and supervision, primarily within the South King County refugee and immigrant communities. She has also served as a mentor to youth of color with the YWCA's GirlsFirst program. Recently, she committed time and energy to be part of the Giving Project focused on environmental issues with the Social Justice Fund Northwest, where she joined a small group of individuals to support social change through targeted philanthropy.

Please join us in celebrating this well-earned recognition at this year's award ceremony, which will also feature MSW student Amal Abdulrahman as a featured speaker.
