Associate Professor Jennifer Stuber, co-founder of the School’s Forefront Suicide Prevention Center of Excellence, will receive two significant awards for her innovative work on suicide prevention policy, education, outreach and research.

Stuber, who received her PhD from the Yale School of Public Health, will be honored by the Association for Yale Alumni in Public Health for her achievements in public health policy. She has been invited to accept the alumni award and present her research at a symposium at Yale on April 27, 2020, as part of the university’s year-long “50 Women at Yale 150” initiative, which commemorates the 50th anniversary of coeducation at Yale College and the 150thanniversary of women students at the university.

The Washington chapter of the National Association of Social Workers will present Stuber with a Public Citizen of the Year Award. The award honors “an outstanding member of the community whose accomplishments exemplify the values and mission of professional social work.” Timed to coincide with Social Work Month, the award will be presented on March 6, 2020, at UW’s Center for Urban Horticulture. School alumna Tina Orwall (MSW ’91) will also receive a Public Citizen of the Year Award that evening.

Stuber co-founded Forefront in 2013. The program has since become a national leader in advocating for policy changes and disseminating evidence-based approaches to suicide prevention in Washington state and beyond. In 2015, Forefront formed a partnership with Facebook to develop content and tools for Facebook users who may be at risk, or know someone at risk, for suicide. Other efforts include suicide-prevention efforts in rural Washington counties, a partnership with gun dealers and pharmacies to improve home safety, and a collaboration with secondary and post-secondary schools to address the mental health needs of students at risk for suicide.
