Abstract:

Preventing high school dropout, juvenile justice involvement, and early parenthood for those youth most at risk within urban environments is challenging. Experimentally testing the impact of a long-term professional mentoring program in a randomized controlled trial on these three outcomes can inform us of the impacts of such programs. Should this approach demonstrate strong evidence related to these outcomes, mentoring programs such as Friends of the Children may play an important preventive role reducing health disparities among “high-risk” individuals and their communities.
